In 1979, a small group of 6 people set up Traidcraft as a Christian response to poverty and to try and address the injustices in world trade.

Since then there have been many highs in its history – including helping set up the Fairtrade Foundation and creating the Fairtrade Mark and many firsts: the first fairly traded crafts, the very first Fairtrade coffee and tea, the first Fairtrade wine, cotton and palm oil... It has worked with producer groups in many different countries, transforming countless lives over the years.

However, in recent years Traidcraft has been running at a loss. Two years ago a new CEO was brought in to try and turn things around. He had previously turned round GEPA the German equivalent of Traidcraft. By this autumn it seemed that this was too late and Traidcraft was set to close its doors by Christmas. (Not surprising in the current economic climate, where even the likes of House of Fraser, Debenhams and M&S are all struggling and with Brexit uncertainty). In the last few weeks, however, a rescue package has been put in place, which means that Traidcraft will not disappear completely, but will resurface in a new very much slimmed down version. Returning the business to profit will involve a simpler range of products, including fewer crafts.

This is wonderful news for all of us who have supported its mission over the last 35 plus years. We know that its mission is still not over and that fighting poverty through trade remains a lifeline for so many. None of us want to let down the producers who have sold their products through Traidcraft over many years.
